Films To Inspire Digital Escapism At Home

escapism-films.jpg

Films have defined so many different aspects of my life. I remember them as cornerstones, or markers that elicit certain memories for me throughout my life. In college, I watched Midnight In Paris hundreds of times as I was getting prepared to study abroad there. There is something so magical about a film set on location. It’s unique, beautiful and so inspiring. I love feeling transported to a beautiful location while never leaving my sofa.

It feels rather fitting to pull together a list of inspiring, beautiful and films right now. This past weekend it was rather dreary here in San Francisco, so I threw on a favorite escapism movie and let it set the mood. I was so inspired that as soon as the sun peaked out for a few minutes, I ran into the backyard to enjoy a glass of wine al fresco.

There are countless movies on my go-to list to put on when I’m needing a little digital escapism. Here are a couple of my top faves:

01. Midnight In Paris

I love this movie. Love, love, love it. It has a stellar cast (Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachael McAdams, to name a few) and an even more amazing soundtrack. This film is typical Woody Allan–it’s shot in a vintage haze which transports you right to the streets of Paris. If you’re looking for an uplifting, historically-driven, French movie this is it.

02. Before Midnight

This film is beautiful. It’s the third in a series–so you should watch the previous two before it but this is my favorite. Set on the Greek countryside, you cannot go wrong.

03. Mamma Mia

Another Greek favorite! However this film is more than location–it has Meryl Streep (so duh) and Amanda Seifried who together, are such an inspiring duo you cannot help feeling uplifted and warm after watching it. It’s bright, happy and immediately transports me to a Greek island. It also has an amazing soundtrack.

04. French Kiss

An oldie, but such a good one. I think I was 9 years old when I first watched this–which is kind of funny if you’ve ever seen it. Meg Ryan plays such a fun character who scours Paris and the South of France searching for the love of her life.

05. Vicki Christina Barcelona

Spain will always have my heart. Its architecture, countryside and art are all so beautiful–and shine through in this Woody Allen classic.
