A Space To Work (Among Other Things)
Our one bedroom apartment doesn’t boast much “free space” as one might call it. So to have two people suddently be working from home 24/7 was quite an adjustment. At first I told myself I’d never cave and set up an actual “desk area”. Well, how wrong I was!
Like most of us recently I’ve been feeling pretty uninspired. Working from home is something that I love, and can normally do easily. However given our current circumstances, I’ve been finding it a bit hard lately to find my rhythm.
Normally, I can set up at our kitchen table and plow through my days work. I did that for a few weeks, and it suddenly got incredibly sad and depressing. I started feeling like I was always in one spot in our apartment–working during the day and then cooking in the evening. I then moved to the living room, surfing from the sofa to the coffee table and then to our cozy accent chair. This also worked for a little while, but as you can imagine, it became super easy to get distracted and demotivated.
I’ve also been swooning over this desk–and the idea of putting it in our bay window for quite some time now. However after everything that has happened, buying a desk just isn’t in the cards for us right now. But then it dawned on me–why not take the console from our entryway and give it a whirl instead?
I thrive on being inspired and motivated by my surroundings. Thus it is in my nature not to upend the aesthetics of our home to cope with the current situation at hand. I love our console dearly, and although it has a perfectly designed home in our entryway–I thought that this new purpose would be just as impactful (for now).
At the beginning of this crisis, I told myself I wouldn’t do this–I think I was trying to prove how easy it was to work from home or something silly like that. But hey, its freaking hard in a crisis! And sometimes, you just need a “place” to get the creative juices flowing.
I love the idea that this new area can double as both a desk–but also as a place to house some of our favorite objects when its not occupied. The stool can tuck gently underneath, becoming the surface for a beautiful book or two while the console can hold a bouquet of flowers and a few favorite candles. I think when you’re seeking to add more pieces to your home, duality becomes a super important aspect especially if you live in a smaller space.
I will always be a strong lover of combining natural materials together to make a statement. Burl and cane are two of my favorite materials that when combined, create pure magic.
As our home continues to evolve with our needs, I think its important that we take a breath and remember that it’s okay not to be perfect right now. Nothing needs to make perfect sense, or be absolutely polished to a tee. Instead, now is a time to do a little experimenting, tinkering and adjusting. We’re in a period of time that we’ll always look back on and probably think, wow what a weird moment that was, so its okay to let our guards down a bit. I myself fall victim to the crutch of perfectionism quite frequently, so this time is super challenging for me.
