Le Weekend | No. 5

Life needs more long weekends…

This weekend felt amazingly long in the best kind of way. After a long workday on Friday I immediately fell into weekend mode after walking in the door. We ordered takeout and snuggled up on the sofa for an evening of much needed “in” time.

One of my favorite weekend traditions this year has been waking up early to go for long urban hikes with Millie. We’ll grab coffee to go or make it at home and then head out the door. It’s so nice to start the day with a little leisurely and gentle movement. This weekend we were super lucky and had amazing weather. It was so beautiful and sunny that we couldn’t stay indoors.

The rest of our Saturday was spent reading, relaxing and watching Indian Jones’ movies (we’re total geeks and I LOVE it). After the farmers market on Sunday we popped over to the East Bay to visit my family for brunch and then a barbecue with my folks in the evening. I always forget that SF is a micro climate and getting even just over the Bay Bridge offers one so much more sunshine and heat!

That morning I whipped up a “healthy” chipotle salad dressing that was a major hit at brunch. I’ll share the recipe this week! I love cooking with flavors like cumin and chipotle, however I’ve never made a dressing with them - but I think I’ve got a winner with this one.

We spent that afternoon hanging out by my parents pool, sipping margaritas and teaching Millie how to swim. It was pure bliss. My dad has been experimenting with adding beer into margs…I was nervous at first but after the first sip I was sold. I’m going to work on a recipe for this a little later as well because it’s too good not to share.

Monday was our hooky day. We’ve almost never taken a vacation day during the week for a one-day excursion but we planned this a few months ago and stuck with it.

We packed the car and headed up to Hog Island Oyster Co for an afternoon of grilling in the sunshine and oyster shucking. The folks up at Hog Island are super friendly and teach you how to shuck and grill oysters. You can reserve a table with a grill and bring your own food - or you can sit in their café area where you can only order from the menu. It was such a cool place and I’d love to go back with a group of friends. After visiting, I’d recommend going in the earlier part of the day (they reserve two slots per day, morning and afternoon). Also make sure to bring extra blankets (it gets chilly), and bug spray!

I haven’t chatted yet about how much I’m loving this new wine! After first trying it from a friend’s recommendation it has now become recent favorite. It’s not too sweet and is slightly bubbly with the perfect balance of low acidity. Look out for a post about it soon!

Have a great week!
